The Rusty Axe reopened in October 2018 with Sue Bloxham (head chef and proprietor) at the helm.

After a brief closure during early summer whilst the bar area was given a decor overhaul, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere to meet for drinks with friends and family. Sue and family are looking forward to welcoming many locals and further afield customers. With the second part of the renovations underway, remodelling the current kitchen and restaurant, installing new appliances and refurbishment of the restaurant area, the kitchen is currently operating on a limited bar menu as completion of the new ‘Open’ kitchen and restaurant is finished.

A little about Sue who is no stranger to either the pub trade or the local area, where she is well know to many as the recent landlady of The Globe Inn, Somerton.

Prior to this, over the years Sue has had hands on experience as the former head chef of the Unicorn Hotel before taking over as the Proprietor and head chef of Somerton’s Market Bar and Bistro, (achieving a listing in The Good Food Guide within the first 4 months of opening).

From this, Sue took on The Old Inn freehouse in the picturesque village of Holton, near Wincanton 2 years ago, whereby creating success in this food driven business enjoyed by all especially locals to the village.

Sue was then pleased to return to her local area, where she grew up and family and friends reside. A joint partnership with nationwide pub company Punch saw Sue enjoying a successful 18 months restoring a thriving food trade within The Globe Inn.

Sue’s new venture here at The Rusty will be a long term investment for both herself and Mentor Inns, emphasising on providing a relaxing, friendly village pub whilst serving locally produced, seasonal menus, freshly prepared here by Sue & her kitchen staff.

Sue is looking forward to ensuring The Rusty Axe remains a village pub, enjoyed by locals and beyond whilst building a reputation for first class food and hospitality.

In addition to a range of seasonal, locally sourced and freshly prepared menus, The Rusty Axe will serve a selection of quality wines, spirits and beers including local cask ales and popular brewery ales from St Austell and Sharps.

Sample one of our many Gin’s in keeping with the ‘Gin’ revival alongside an array of Brandy’s and Whiskey’s featuring in the newly refurbished bar area.

An investment into redesigning the kitchen and restaurant area is under way, with completion very soon. Our new extended kitchen opening onto the newly refurbished dining area will create the perfect space for intimate dining for two or for family get together for all the family. In the meanwhile a Bar and Sunday lunch menu is available whilst we complete the renovations.
